Can I apply using the Mx title?

Yes, you can apply for an account or credit card using the gender-neutral Mx title in branch. The title will appear as Mx on your debit or credit card, and in any communications we send you.

Some of our online forms allow you to apply using the Mx title. If you prefer the Mx title and the form you’re using doesn’t allow it, you can let us know once your account is open and we’ll update your account. We’re working to include the Mx title on our online application forms.

To prevent fraudulent activity on your account, we’ll ask questions relating to gender when you apply, although this is something we’re working to change. This information will be stored on our system but won’t be used in any communications.

If you’re an existing customer, you can also amend your title to Mx. This will appear in all future communications and you’ll be sent a new credit or debit card to reflect the change.

Here at The Co-operative Bank, we promote diversity and inclusion across our business and always strive to support the needs of our customers. We’re working hard to review and update our systems, as part of our ongoing commitment to you.

About the Mx title

Mx (pronounced ‘mix’) is a gender-neutral alternative to gender-specific titles such as Mr, Mrs, Miss, and Ms. It can be used before a person's full name or surname by those who wish to avoid specifying their gender, or those who prefer not to identify themselves as male or female.

This may apply to our trans* and non-binary customers and colleagues, as well as others who feel this category best suits their needs.

Please note: this option is only available to Co-operative Bank or smile personal banking customers, although we hope to be able to offer it to Britannia, Platform and Business banking customers in the future.
