With a credit card you decide how much you repay (subject to minimum payment).
If you only pay the minimum balance each month, it’ll take longer and cost more to clear your debt. Paying back more than the minimum, without over-stretching yourself financially, means you’ll clear your balance quicker and pay back less interest.
To avoid unexpected charges and fees, set up a Direct Debit to pay your bill each month.
Paying your credit card online
- Log in to online banking.
- Click 'Pay and transfer' from the main menu
- Select the account you want to pay your bill from
- Select your credit card from 'Your accounts' list
- Follow the on-screen instructions.Log in to online banking

Reference: Your 16 digit credit card number
Whilst we work on some improvements, you are currently unable to add a reference when paying another Co-operative Bank or smile account. The sort code of the account you are paying will start with ‘08’ or ‘83’ if this applies. If you need to add a reference to your payment, call us on +44(0)3457 212 212 (call charges apply). Lines are open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.
Please allow enough time for your payment to reach your credit card account.
Paying your credit card using your app

- Select Pay a bill or send money.
- Enter payment details.

If you’re paying from a current account with another bank, please pay no later than 3.30pm on the day the payment is due.
We will process your payment on the day we receive it. If making a Faster Payment, it should normally reach your credit card immediately.
Pay at least 2 business days before the day before the payment is due
You are also able to pay in any bank displaying the Visa symbol, although this may be subject to a small fee (although we cannot advise on how long this will take to process).
Please allow enough time for your payment to reach your credit card account.
If you’re paying from a Co-operative Bank current account, please allow two Business Days for your payment to be processed.
If you’re paying from a current account with another bank, please pay no later than 3.30pm on the day the payment is due.

Paying your credit card by Direct Debit
You can pay your minimum amount or your entire balance each month by Direct Debit.
You can set up a Direct Debit in any of these ways:

- Download and print off a copy of our Credit Card Direct Debit Mandate form.
- Request a form in branch.
You will never forget to pay so you will never get charged for a late fee.
Post at least 7 days before payment is due.
Avoiding fees and charges
If you exceed your credit limit or pay your bill late, you will be charged.
The best way to avoid fees and charges is to make sure you pay off your credit card each month:
- Make sure your payments reach your account on time.
- Set up a Direct Debit to pay the full balance or minimum amount due every month, then there are no worries about forgetting dates.
- Keep track of your credit card spending to make sure you don't go over your agreed credit limit.
