We do not charge you for using your debit card abroad when you pay in the local currency. But there may be extra fees from the retailer or cash machine where you use your card. You should see any charges before you complete the transaction.

We do not charge you for cash withdrawals with your debit card abroad. Some ATM providers may apply their own charges. The ATM should show you any extra charges before you withdraw money.

We use the Visa Scheme Exchange Rate. To check your exchange rate, use the calculator on the VISA website. Enter 0 in the bank fee box. Paying in the local currency means you'll pay the VISA rate, rather than a merchant’s conversion rate, which may be higher.

Yes. All personal current account customers can pay in local currency and withdraw cash with their debit card for free. Other charges may apply.

Please note: This does not apply to Co-operative Bank credit cards, or business account debit cards. You can find out more about travelling for business, or using your credit card abroad here. 

'Other charges may apply' means you may still pay fees even if the bank doesn't charge a conversion or withdrawal fee.

Some ATM providers may have their own charges. Your mobile network provider may charge roaming fees if you use the mobile app abroad.

We’ve removed the currency conversion charge from your account when you choose to pay in the local currency, so you should always do this if possible. This means you will not be charged any fees directly by us.

There may still be additional charges from the retailer or cash machine where you use your card. Any extra charges should be shown to you before you complete the transaction. 

If you choose to pay in pounds sterling instead, some fees may apply.
