This month we’re supporting Oxfam, our charity partner, to boost their Second Hand September campaign. So what does the campaign involve?
What is Second Hand September?
Oxfam’s Second Hand September campaign runs annually and encourages everyone to come together to choose a more planet-friendly way to shop.
Why does it matter?
How and where we shop matters. Fashion has become one of the most polluting industries on the planet.
It’s fuelling climate change, whilst the people who have done the least to cause the climate crisis are being pushed further into poverty. And today, we’re seeing increasing trends towards a throwaway culture, resulting in planet-wrecking waste.
So, by recirculating our clothes – buying, wearing and donating second hand – we can help to reduce the demand. This can help to reduce the damage to our planet.
By shopping with Oxfam, you’re investing in the vital work that they do in their local communities to tackle climate change.
This September, join us and take a stance against the impact of fast fashion by shopping second hand. Reclaim what style stands for and dress for the world you want to see.
What are we doing to support the campaign?
At The Co-operative Bank, we’re dedicated to protecting the environment and tackling the climate-nature crisis.
In fact, in our last customer poll, our customers told us overwhelmingly that the planet was the most pressing issue facing society today. This poll informed commitments within our unique Ethical Policy, which guides how we do business.
Through our partnership with Oxfam we’re:
- lending our time by volunteering in Oxfam charity shops across the country, including at Manchester’s brand new Superstore
- collecting second hand items from colleagues wanting to donate after a summer clear out
- spreading awareness with our customers about the importance of shopping second hand.
How can you get involved?
We’re helping to spread the word to our customers about how they too can do their bit for the planet.
This September we’re encouraging you to explore slow fashion, sustainable fashion and ethical fashion, shop and donate second hand and help create a fairer world.
