Bank accounts with breakdown cover

Some bank accounts include extras like breakdown cover and travel insurance for a monthly fee. These are known as packaged bank accounts.

In this guide, we explain what breakdown cover is, how it works, what to consider when choosing a policy, and how our packaged bank account, Everyday Extra, compares.

What is breakdown cover?

Breakdown cover can help if your vehicle stops working. This means that if you get a flat tyre or your car will not start, you can call roadside assistance. This is when a mechanic comes to you and tries to fix your vehicle. If they cannot, they’ll tow you to a garage for repairs so you’re not left stranded.

Some policies may include excess fees or limits on the number of call-outs, so always check the details.

What’s included?

This depends on the provider and policy, but most breakdown cover includes:

  • roadside help during a journey
  • towing your vehicle to a garage if needed
  • assistance to continue your journey

What’s not included?

Not all problems are covered by breakdown cover providers. This often excludes:

  • lost keys or being locked out of your vehicle
  • running out of fuel (some providers may come out but charge a fee)
  • cover for passengers travelling in someone else’s car without breakdown cover
  • vehicles without a valid MOT or service
  • the cost of any parts or repairs after your vehicle is towed

This list is not exhaustive, always read the policy details to check what’s excluded. You should always check the provider’s policy documents for all exclusions, limitations, terms and conditions.

Which breakdown cover is best?

The best breakdown cover for you depends on what you need. Consider whether you want:

  • full cover or just roadside assistance
  • to cover one car or all vehicles you travel in
  • to cover multiple drivers, such as a household
  • at-home breakdown cover

When comparing breakdown policies, check whether they include the services you’d need in an emergency. Also consider value for money and if the provider is reliable and well-known.

Do I need breakdown cover?

Breakdown cover is not a legal requirement but can save time, money, and stress. It’s particularly useful if you drive regularly or over long distances, make essential journeys, or have an older vehicle.

You might not need it if you do not use your car very often or if your car is still under warranty and includes roadside assistance.

Is it worth getting a bank account with breakdown cover?

A packaged account could save you money if you’d use the included benefits. For example, if you drive regularly, travel in the UK and abroad, and own a mobile phone, one monthly payment may be more cost effective than buying individual policies.

It might not be worth it if you already pay separately for the same services or would not use the extra features. You should ensure that the account and all included benefits are suitable for your needs.

Things to remember

Make sure to:

  • check you’re eligible for the cover

  • review what’s included and excluded

  • compare standalone breakdown policies with packaged account features

  • review all the account benefits ensuring they are suitable for you
