CHAPS payments

CHAPS stands for Clearing House Automated Payment System. It is a method of making same-day electronic sterling transfers, for any amount, to clearing banks in the United Kingdom.

Request a CHAPS payment

To request a CHAPS payment, please log in to online banking and send a secure message for the account you wish to make the CHAPS payment from. You can send a secure message in the main menu by selecting ‘Help and support’ then ‘Send a secure message.’

If you don't have online banking

You can make a CHAPS payment by:

Visiting a local branch and bringing your ID
Calling us - Lines are open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.

What we'll need

We require you to provide us with the following information before a CHAPS payment can be made:

Sort code and address of the beneficiary bank
Beneficiary account number and account name
Any reference number or name to be included with the payment
The amount to be sent
The date the transfer is to take place
Purpose of payment.

Timescales

A CHAPS request received before 4:30pm will be processed the same working day.

A CHAPS request received after 4:30pm will be processed the next working day.

Once a CHAPS payment has been sent it can't be returned. There may be occasions where your payment is subject to extra checks. This may mean that your payment may not be processed until the following working day.

Charges

There is a standard charge of £25 for each payment.
