CHAPS payments

CHAPS stands for Clearing House Automated Payment System. It is a method of making same-day electronic sterling transfers, for any amount, to clearing banks in the United Kingdom.

Request a CHAPS payment

To request a CHAPS payment, please log in to online banking and send a secure message for the account you wish to make the CHAPS payment from. You can send a secure message in the main menu by selecting ‘Help and support’ then ‘Send a secure message.’

If you don't have online banking

You can make a CHAPS payment by:

  • Visiting a local branch and bringing your ID
  • Calling us - Lines are open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.

If you call us to make a CHAPS payment of over £10,000, you’ll need to make a written request, sign it, and either email it to us at or bring it to a local branch.

What we'll need

We require you to provide us with the following information before a CHAPS payment can be made:

  • Sort code and address of the beneficiary bank
  • Beneficiary account number and account name
  • Any reference number or name to be included with the payment
  • The amount to be sent
  • The date the transfer is to take place.

A CHAPS request received before 4:30pm will be processed the same working day.

A CHAPS request received after 4:30pm will be processed the next working day.

Once a CHAPS payment has been sent it can't be returned.

There is a standard charge of £25 for each payment.
