What is CHAPS?

CHAPS is a way to make same day electronic transfers in Sterling. It is typically used for sending payments above £100,000 or for urgent payments, but it can be used to send any amount to clearing banks in the United Kingdom.

How to send a CHAPS payment

In Business Online Banking

By email

  • Please note: you will be charged for using CHAPS. Please refer to your account tariff for more details. A CHAPS payment cannot be returned once it has been sent.

  • In Business Online Banking

If you have requested the option to use CHAPS in Business Online Banking, you can make the payment online.

    In Business Online Banking:

    1. Select ‘Payment and transfers’ from the left hand menu
    2. Select ‘Pay and transfer’
    3. Select ‘Pay someone else’
    4. Remove the tick from ‘Pay using Faster Payments’
    5. Select ‘CHAPS’ and press ‘Continue.’

Then, you will need to follow the on screen instructions to complete the payment.

If you have set up approval rules in Business Online Banking, you may need a signatory to approve the payment before it can be sent to the recipient.

CHAPS payments sent online are guaranteed to reach the recipient on the same day if we receive the request by 5.30pm.

  • By email

You can email a scanned copy of your request to chapsrequests@co-operativebank.co.uk.

All requests must be on letter headed paper and signed in accordance with your account mandate. Please include:

    • your business account details
    • the beneficiary’s account details
    • the payment details and any reference

CHAPS payments sent by email are guaranteed to reach the recipient on the same day if we receive the request by 4.30pm.
