Using your cards abroad

You can relax, enjoy your holiday and use your cards as you normally would almost anywhere in the world. You don’t need to let us know your travel plans in advance, provided you are travelling within the EU or to Turkey. If you're travelling outside of these areas, please contact us to let us know. That way, we’ll expect to see foreign transactions on your account.

Foreign Currency

Don’t wait ’til you get to the airport. We offer a travel money service, exclusive to our current account holders. Order a maximum of £2,500 in your local Co-operative Bank branch and get great rates on travel money from 80 different countries. The best part? No commission fees. You can even order travel money by secure message or phone and get it delivered to your door.

  • Home delivery is free for orders over £500, with a £5 charge for orders under this amount. If you use your debit card to buy foreign currency or travellers' cheques in the UK, there's no cash fee included.

Paying in sterling

When abroad, you may be asked if you would prefer to pay in sterling. Whilst this might seem appealing as you’ll know exactly what you’re spending, retailers may use an unfavourable rate of exchange to convert the price.

Charges and Rates

When buying things abroad with your credit or debit card, we do have certain charges and rates to keep in mind. These are consistent across various countries – so whether it’s business in Berlin, or adventures in Athens, you can get a clear idea of what to expect. Exchange rates vary from day to day and from currency to currency. But if you get in touch, we can let you know whatever the current rate is. Please note, we may contact you about certain transactions, and advise you on charges.
