Working with Amnesty International UK

Changing the world together.

Our partnership with Amnesty

As we pioneer banking which aims to make a positive difference to the lives of our customers and communities; we strive to take a stand on causes that touch their lives, and the lives of others.

Our customers have always told us that supporting human rights matters to them. That’s why it’s one of our original and long-standing commitments in our Ethical Policy, in which we promise to uphold our co-operative values, promote human rights and equality for all.

This is why we’re proud of our established partnership with Amnesty International UK; as we continue to support the fantastic work they carry out. We stand together for individuals who are at risk of experiencing human rights violations.

What we're doing, together

Supporting Team Amnesty

Team Amnesty is an inspirational group of Amnesty International UK supporters who walk, run, cycle, bake, game, sing, throw themselves out of planes, and even memorise Shakespeare Sonnets, all in order to raise funds for Amnesty’s crucial work.

The team also participate in world famous events such as the London Marathon, as well as host their own events people can join, including their Amnestea coffee morning, a tea and coffee morning to raise money, or host live music events, such as Jamnesty.

As supporters of Team Amnesty, we not only provide funding but also stand in solidarity with the participants challenging themselves in the aim to promote Amnesty International UK’s mission — to protect human rights across the globe.

Before Our Eyes

Nobody should go without safe shelter, access to healthcare or food. Yet, as our charity partner, Amnesty International UK, highlights in their new campaign, our human rights are under threat and these issues are affecting people’s everyday lives in the UK.

Write for Rights campaign

How your words can help Amnesty change the world.

We are proud to support Amnesty International’s annual Write for Rights campaign; offering support, and solidarity to people around the globe who may need it most.

Since 2019, our colleagues and customers have contributed over 10,000 actions of writing letters or signing online petitions to support people and organisations who are enduring human rights abuses across the world.

The overwhelming success of Amnesty’s previous Write for Rights campaigns show how your messages of solidarity, alongside fellow Amnesty supporters from around the world, offer support and reassurance to people carrying out difficult and often dangerous work, in order to stand-up for the human rights of others. Whether your words reach an LGBTI organisation suffering homophobic attacks, or a lawyer facing jail for their work for human rights, these messages of support have such a great impact on those that receive them.

How you can get involved

Although it only takes a few minutes to send a letter or sign a petition — your words are powerful. And your actions can really make a difference to someone’s life; applying pressure onto the authorities to take action to help people facing torture, harassment, or unjust imprisonment.

Our Colleague Amnesty Group

Here at The Co-operative Bank, our colleagues share our customers’ passion for protecting human rights. And it was this enthusiasm that led to the formation of the bank’s Colleague Amnesty Group in September 2019. Making us the only UK organisation to have a dedicated Colleague Amnesty Group.

Our Colleague Amnesty Group continues to grow from strength-to-strength, meeting regularly to proudly stand together and fight for human rights causes alongside Amnesty International UK. Not just as colleagues part of a business, but as a group of like-minded individuals who truly want to make a difference.

How you can get involved with Amnesty

The original ethical bank

At The Co-operative Bank, we believe that co-operation leads to a better society for everyone.

So naturally, we strive to create a community of people who get involved with their communities, and are passionate about causes that align to our values and ethics; protecting human rights and equality.

Every day, ordinary people with extraordinary passion are standing up for freedom and equality in communities all over the world and we’re proud to be a bank that works alongside and champions those people.

We are the only UK high street bank with a customer-led Ethical Policy that underpins everything we do. Since 1872, when we were formed to provide banking services for the co-operative movement, we’ve remained committed to keeping the co-operative principles at the very heart of our business.
