What are Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay?

Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay give you the ability to make contactless purchases via your smartphone, tablet, laptop or smartwatch above the £45 transaction value that we see on physical contactless cards, where retailers allow.
How easy is it to use?
Using one of the three pays means you don’t have to withdraw cash or touch chip and pin terminals. Simply hold your device at the terminal and authorise the payment using Touch ID, Face ID or your device’s PIN or passcode.
You can also use it to make purchases at many online stores without having to keep re-entering your card details. If the website you are using accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay purchases, you will be given the option at checkout to select the card you wish to pay with.
Better still, if you ever forget your physical cards or run out of cash, your debit or credit card is ready and available to use on your device as and when you need it, giving you peace of mind that you’ve always got your money in your back pocket.
It’s safe and secure with your card protected by the same fraud rules as your physical debit or credit card, allowing you an easier and quicker way to shop.

Welcome to this podcast with a few tips and hints about using Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay.
Q1. Is there a limit when using Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay spend like there is for contactless cards?
Contactless payments with your physical card allows you to spend up to £45 in one transaction, without having to enter your PIN. Over this amount you are required to enter your PIN.
When making purchases using one of the three pays, below or above £45, you will be prompted to use Face ID, Touch ID, or the PIN/Passcode for your device to authorise that it is you making the payment.
This is all in place to help protect you from fraud.
Q2: Is my bank account secure if I use it?
Yes, it is secure. When you make a purchase, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay never store your card number on your device or on their servers, and when you pay, your card numbers are never shared. Your details are secure.
Q3: I’m always having to enter my card details when shopping online – how does it work with online stores?
If the website you are purchasing from accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, you won’t need to add your debit or credit cards details to make your purchase. Simply select your device’s wallet as your preferred option and then choose the card you wish to pay from.
Q4: Can I use it when paying for bus and train journeys?
Yes you can. You can even set it up to have one of your debit or credit cards as your preferred travel card. So, every time you need to pay for a bus or train journey, you just hold your device near to a supported public transport card reader and payment will be taken.
Q5: I have more than one bank card stored in my device but I have a preference for using a particular card. Can I set it up to do that?
Yes, absolutely. You can choose which card you want it to default to if you have multiple cards. Of course, if there’s ever a time you want to use another card then it’s easy to choose a different one before paying via the wallet on your device.
Q6: Will my Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay card transactions appear on my list of transactions in online and mobile banking as well as on my statement?
Yes, your transactions will appear in online and mobile banking as well as on your statements, just as they would do if you had used your physical debit or credit card. If you want to view the transactions you have made solely via your device, you can do so when you open up the Wallet app on your device.
Q7. What happens if I lose my physical debit card or credit card?
If you lose your debit or credit card, you should contact us straight away to report it lost or stolen and we will cancel the card for you and reissue a new one. After one working day, the card you have registered in your device’s wallet will update, allowing you to carry on making purchases while you wait for your physical card to arrive.
Q8. What happens if I lose the device that my debit or credit card is stored on?
You can contact your device manufacturer, or either log in remotely to the Android Device Manager, Samsung ‘Find My Mobile’ service, or iCloud – dependent upon your device – and change your settings to block use of any cards that are added to the device you have lost. You should also contact your bank so the card can be deactivated from use.
