What is a personal loan?

A personal loan is a sum of money that you can borrow from a loan provider. If you're accepted for a loan, you'll be paid a lump sum up-front. You'll then pay off the loan (plus any interest) in regular payments over a fixed period of time.

Are the loans on offer secured or unsecured?

We work in partnership with Freedom Finance to offer unsecured, personal loans. An unsecured loan is often referred to as a personal loan. ‘Unsecured’ simply means that you are allowed to borrow money without having to offer any assets to secure the loan.

Is a personal loan right for me?

A personal loan can be used for many different things, like buying a new car or financing a home renovation - from a new kitchen to a house extension.

You could also pay off existing and expensive debts by consolidating them in one place with one interest rate. However, bear in mind that you might extend the terms of the debt and increase the total amount you pay back.

Loan providers will check your current circumstances to see if you can afford to pay back the loan. Of course, circumstances can change so you should understand that your credit score will be affected if you can’t make your payments.

How a soft search loan application works

A ‘soft search’ credit check means that a company will look at your credit file, however, unlike traditional credit checks, a soft search will not have a negative impact on your credit score.

Whilst a soft search credit check will still be recorded on your credit file, it is not visible to lenders and therefore will not affect their lending decision or your chances of receiving finance in the future.
