Social housing

The Co-operative Bank has a natural affinity with the Housing Association sector.

Both Co-operatives and Housing Associations were originally created to meet issues of social and economic need within local communities at a time when the most vulnerable in society were suffering hardship. Today The Co-operative Bank and the Housing Association movement still demonstrate those original values in a highly complex and financially driven society.

For many years The Co-operative Bank has provided services to Housing Associations including term loans, investments, general banking facilities, plus payment services for their tenants. Our customers, including Housing Associations, particularly value our ethical stance and the work we carry out to support vulnerable groups at home and in tackling global poverty.

Our specialist social housing team based in Manchester, along with a local service provided by our network of Corporate Banking Centres located throughout the UK support our existing and new customers. This support includes:

  • a dedicated relationship team
  • a flexible approach that takes account of current and future business needs.

Our customers

Our Housing Association customers vary significantly in size, and operate either nationally or within a defined local community. Some have a history of satisfying local housing need going back many years, others were created relatively recently for the purpose of purchasing and improving council housing stock.

We are always keen to attract new housing association customers, and offer a full range of financial products and services including:

  • a full current account banking service
  • a range of deposit accounts for short and medium term funds
  • term Loans – typically £1m - £25m up to 25 years
  • card payment facilities for housing association tenants

In addition The Bank has a specialist team providing funding and advice in connection with renewables and energy efficiency.
