International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs)
International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs) help to standardise the identification of bank accounts and banks for cross-border European payments. They also help to reduce errors and delays when making overseas transactions.
An IBAN consists of the following:
- a country code (GB for the United Kingdom)
- a check number (calculated by the financial institution issuing the IBAN)
- an issuing Bank code (CPBK for The Co-operative Bank).
This sequence is followed by your usual sort code and account number.
For example:| country code | check number | issuing bank code | sort code & account number |
|---|---|---|---|
| GB | 12 | CPBK | 08929912345678 |
