Wireless networks

Wireless Networks (WI-FI) allow computers to talk to one another using a radio link similar to a cordless telephone. This means that anyone in range can pick up the signal making WIFI networks at risk

What are the risks?

  • Users are able to connect to your braodband service without your permission (Freeloading).
  • Hackers are able to access your broadband service, obtaining your personal or banking information.

Before using your WIFI network service, it is important you configure the network yourself to make it secure and loading a strong password to access the network will prevent unauthorised users entering into your service.

There are generally two types of security your wireless connection can use

  • WEP - Wired Equivalent Privacy, and
  • WPA - WiFi Protected Access

WEP is better than nothing but it's still 'Weak Protection' and has easily been hacked. WPA will offer more security and should be used if your hardware supports it, and WPA2 is even better. Check your hardware documentation to see if it can support and how to use WPA or WPA2 encription.

Without protection, WI-FI networks are vunerable.
