Our Ethical Engagement Policy statements

We believe we can change companies from the inside

Members of The Co-operative Insurance have asked that we use our position as a major investor, to engage companies on a commercial level. In this way, we can challenge major businesses from the inside, to improve their performance in relation to issues of concern to our customers', such as climate change and human rights, in a way that other organisations cannot.

It means that every time we vote at an AGM or meet with the companies in which we invest we have the chance to make them better, fairer businesses.

What our current Policy covers…

Read about examples of the many projects we've been working on during 2005 and 2006, from protecting workers in China, to promoting wind power and campaigning against excessive pay for top directors.

We always vote on shareholder resolutions put forward at general meetings of the companies we invest in, and write to the companies explaining our reasoning when we have abstained or voted against a resolution. Further, CFS was the first institutional investor in the UK to publish its voting record.

The Co-operative Bank has turned away over £900 millions of loans to businesses not in keeping with its Ethical policy
