International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs)

International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs) help to standardise the identification of bank accounts and banks for cross-border European payments. They also help to reduce errors and delays when making overseas transactions.

An IBAN consists of the following:

  • a country code (GB for the United Kingdom)
  • a check number (calculated by the financial institution issuing the IBAN)
  • an issuing Bank code (CPBK for The Co-operative Bank).

This sequence is followed by your usual sort code and account number.

For example:
country code check number issuing bank code sort code & account number
GB 12 CPBK 08929912345678
