Chip and PIN

Your personal identity security guard

Chip and PIN has been proven to cut credit and debit card fraud, by making card payments even more secure. Instead of signing a paper receipt at the till, you enter a four digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) in the same way as using a cash machine.

The Chip is the microchip that is embedded in your debit or credit card. It holds your personal details (for example, name, card number and expiry date) and provides additional security features. Your existing cards already carry a chip, identified by the gold or silver pad on the front left. The new technology checks the PIN you entered in the keypad against the PIN held on the chip. This is used to verify your identity instead of checking a signature on a receipt.

Travelling abroad

Depending on the country you are in and whether or not that country has chip and PIN technology, you will either be asked to sign your name or input your PIN.
