Legal expenses insurance
Why should you have to pay for your out of pocket expenses when the accident wasn't your fault?
Did you know that you may be able to claim for your policy excess and any loss of earnings as a result of an accident that wasn't your fault?
For a small additional premium the experienced Co‑operative Legal Services team will be able to provide a range of services to help you in any motoring related legal matter:
- up to £50,000 in legal fees to help you recover your excess, medical bills, loss of earnings or to pursue a personal injury claim.
- if the standard courtesy car offered by our repair network is not suitable or unavailable, a replacement vehicle could be arranged at no cost to you.
- access to a 24 hour legal helpline which can provide assistance and advice on issues such as speeding convictions or parking fines and vehicle ownership responsibilities.
Enhanced Courtesy Car Cover
Our standard Co-operative Insurance Car policy entitles you to a courtesy car, subject to availability, whilst your vehicle is being repaired by a Co-operative Insurance appointed repairer after suffering insured damage.
Being without a vehicle for a prolonged period of time can be extremely disruptive to your daily routines such as picking up the kids from school or getting to work. Our Enhanced cover is designed to keep you on the road whilst your claim is being resolved.
By selecting Enhanced Courtesy Car cover as an optional extra under your policy, you will be provided with a replacement vehicle similar in size and type to your own (subject to certain limitations) for up to 14 days if your vehicle is stolen and not recovered, immobilised as a result of a road accident or written off.
We’ve teamed up with Albany Assistance Limited to provide this option which also has the following great features:
- You and up to two other drivers named on your policy can be included provided you all holds full UK driving licences can be included
- 32 car delivery centres across the country ensure the rapid delivery of the replacement car to your door
- Enhanced Courtesy Cars come fully insured, subject to an excess of £250. Alternatively, you could opt to pay a collision damage waiver and enjoy excess-free motoring
- If any additional equipment is required to be supplied with the Enhanced Courtesy Car (e.g. tow bar, roof rack or child car seat), we will do our best to accommodate these requirements. A charge may be made for some items of additional equipment
- You can extend the period for which you have the use of the replacement car beyond 14 days if needed. Whilst you will be responsible for paying the hire charges for the period in excess of 14 days, preferential rates are available to The Co-operative Insurance customers.
Please note:
- If your vehicle is a motor caravan, the Enhanced Courtesy Car provided will be a motor car.
- If your vehicle has been adapted to accommodate a disabled driver or passenger, we cannot guarantee being able to provide a suitable replacement vehicle.
The Co-operative car insurance breakdown cover
Unfortunately breakdowns can happen. But with Co‑operative Car Insurance Breakdown whatever happens, help is less than an hour away (or we'll give you £10 to say sorry for being late).
Co‑operative Car Insurance Breakdown is a full Europe-wide rescue and recovery service for breakdown and accident, which is an optional addition to your Co‑operative Insurance motor policy.
If your vehicle is immobilised as a result of breakdown, fire, theft or attempted theft (on the road or at home), we'll arrange and pay for:
- Roadside repair (including one hour of labour) or recovery to a suitable repairer or your home
- up to one hour's assistance to try to repair the vehicle
- if the vehicle cannot be repaired at the scene, we will arrange for it to be taken, with the driver and passengers, to a suitable garage for repair at your cost
- if the vehicle cannot be repaired the same day, we will arrange for:
- the vehicle, transport of the driver and up to six passengers to be taken home or to your destination and, at your request, the vehicle will be taken to a garage of your choice within 15 miles, or alternatively
- we can provide one nights hotel accommodation (Bed & Breakfast only, up to £40 per person) for the driver and passengers, or
- a replacement hire vehicle for up to 24 hours
- chauffeur to your home if the sole driver is injured or ill and is unable to drive
- a message service, informing up to two people of your breakdown
- repatriation of driver, car and up to six passengers to the UK, following an accident abroad, where the car cannot be repaired in time for your return home.

Extended foreign use
Are you a frequent visitor to Europe, or do you like to escape to the Med to avoid the British Winter? If you spend more than 30 days a year in Europe, then why don’t you consider our Extended European Cover which provides you with a similar level of motor cover as you enjoy in the UK for 365 days a year, subject to a 90 day trip limit, for a one-off annual premium. This means that you can go away without having to let us know, with peace of mind that you have the backing of Co‑operative Insurance and it's partners if you are involved in an accident abroad.
