How does Chip and PIN work?
Chip and PIN has been proven to cut credit and debit card fraud, by making card payments even more secure. Instead of signing a paper receipt at the till, you enter a four digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) in the same way as using a cash machine.
Can I change my PIN?
You can change your PIN at any Co-operative Bank and most UK Cash Machines. So why not change your PIN to a more memorable number? Just make sure you keep this number secret and don't use numbers that others could easily guess.

Travelling abroad
Depending on the country you are in and whether or not that country has chip and PIN technology, you will either be asked to sign your name or input your PIN.

Will the PIN I use for making purchases be the same PIN I use for cash withdrawals at the cash machine?
Yes.
Can I still pay by cheque once PIN is introduced?
Yes. Cheques supported by cheque guaranteed cards will continue valid form of payment.
In what case would I not have to use a PIN?
In all mail order transactions whether over the telephone, on paper or on the Internet. There are no circumstances in which you should be asked your PIN in these situations.
Can I use my new card abroad?
Chip and PIN adoption is a gradual process, but the drive to make it standard is international. If the country you are visiting has already made the transition to PIN, you will be asked to enter your PIN as you do at home. Otherwise you will be asked to provide your signature like you used to do.
Will I be able to keep my current PIN?
You can keep the same PIN as you have now or you can change it to a more memorable number at any Co-operative Bank cash machine. Just ensure you don't use numbers that can easily be guessed.
What if I forget my PIN when I get to the till?
You should tell the cashier who will advise you what to do next.
Will the PIN machine swallow my card if I get the number wrong three times?
No. If you type in the wrong PIN three times consecutively, your PIN will be locked.
What if the retailer does not accept chip and PIN?
If the retailer has not adopted the technology yet, you may use your signature to confirm identification and complete the transaction.
