Surviving student life can be a bit of a balancing act, with your finances being no exception. But you're not alone - here are a few ways you might get extra help

Course fees

Everyone has to contribute towards their course fees, but you may qualify for help from your LEA toward these costs.

Student loans

You can apply for a student loan from the Student Loans Company for your tuition fees, your living costs or for both. The advantages of student loans are:-

  • Low rates of interest
  • Repayments don't start until you have left higher education and are earning £15,000

Grants

Depending on income you may qualify for a non-repayable grant of upto £2,700

Other sources

  • Bursaries - Many colleges or universities offer non-repayable bursaries or other financial support if you are really struggling
  • Sponsorship - Some employers may help pay your way through college - although you may have to work for them for a certain time afterwards
  • Work - A part time job during term time or the holidays, can be invaluable
