commentary
Background Water is one of life's most basic necessities. Water is often taken for granted because it is seen as a renewable resource. But freshwater, on which we all depend, is finite. At current rates, it is predicted that by 2025 two-thirds of the world's population will live in water-stressed conditions.i

Water usage During 2002, water consumption across the bank reduced by 16.2%. The bank's main offices showed a reduction of 18.5% compared with 2001. During 2002, Unysis, one of the bank's tenants, vacated Prescot Street in London. This realised a saving of almost 3.4 million litres. The toilet refurbishment at Delf House, Skelmersdale resulted in an additional saving of over 2.3 million litres. Water consumption per employee is 9,574 litres across all main offices. Water consumption per employee bank-wide is 10,417 litres. Water consumption per customer account has reduced by 42.3% compared with 1999. The bank's water consumption is substantially lower than the Environment Agency benchmark of 18,250 litres per person and is now approaching the Building Research Establishment's best practice target of 9,000 litres per person.

Water discharges All water entering the bank's premises is taken from the water supply network and, after use, the vast majority is discharged into the foul sewer network. At the bank's Pyramid site in Stockport, a small amount (609,000 litres) was discharged to the atmosphere.

By comparison, according to their Sustainability Report 2001, water consumption at Credit Suisse Group is 107 litres per employee per day (cf. 29 litres per employee per day at The Co-operative Bank).

Partnership In October 2002, the bank launched a range of affinity Visa credit cards with WaterAid, follow this link for details of the bank's Affinity Visa credit cards.
