commentary
Awareness There has been an improvement in suppliers' awareness of the bank's ethical and ecological policies, particularly in respect of ecological issues. 82% of suppliers (2001: 76%) are aware of the bank's ethical or ecological policies. 78% of suppliers are aware of the bank's Ethical Policy (2001: 70%), 70% of the Ecological Mission Statement (2001: 58%), and 52% of the Partnership Approach (2001: 48%). During 2002, tender documents continued to highlight the Ethical Policy and Ecological Mission Statement and requested appropriate information from suppliers for screening purposes. To view the ethical and ecological screening page follow this link.

Impact There has been a significant increase in the proportion of suppliers reporting that the bank's policies have had a positive impact on the way their business operates in terms of being more ecologically sound and socially responsible, and in the choice of companies they use themselves. Almost half (46%) now state that the bank's policies have had an impact on the way their business operates (2001: 25%). This increase is a consequence of the bank's engagement with a range of suppliers as described on the ethical and ecological screening page. This achievement is particularly impressive considering that, for the majority of suppliers, the bank's business constitutes a small proportion of their turnover (less than 1% for more than half of suppliers). The most frequently mentioned impacts are increased awareness of ethical and ecological issues, increased recycling and increased use of sustainable products and services. The bank did not hold further awareness-raising events with suppliers in 2002. However, as evidenced in the supplier research, it has achieved the intended increase in awareness through other means of supplier engagement.
