1844
The Rochdale Pioneers - 28 working men open a small grocer's shop in Toad Lane, Rochdale

1872
Co-operative Wholesale Society opens a Loan and Deposit Department.

1876
The Loan and Deposit Department becomes CWS Bank.

1971
The bank is registered as Co-operative Bank Limited.

1974
First UK bank to offer free banking for those in credit.

1988
Mission Statement drawn up, to reflect Co-operative principles.

1992
First bank in the world to announce a customer-derived ethical stance.

1996
Ecological Mission Statement announced, based on The Natural Step.

1997
The bank celebrates its 125th anniversary, and launches the Partnership Approach.

1998
First bank in the world to produce an independently verified sustainability report.

1999
The bank launches www.smile.co.uk, the UK's first full Internet bank.

1999-2003
Commitment to assess the secondary impact of products and services.

2001-2005
