Using your card abroad

Looking forward to that holiday?
Of course you are, and it could be much more enjoyable if you take your debit and credit card.

No large amounts of cash to carry around all the time – or worries about having it stolen
Just relax and enjoy all the convenience and security of using your card to pay for goods and services, just like you do at home. In fact, Visa debit and credit cards are accepted at 30 million places worldwide and you can withdraw cash from any ATM where you see the Visa logo.

Take your card on holidays within the EU or Turkey without letting us know

No matter where you are travelling to you can relax, enjoy your holiday and, of course, continue to use your cards for purchases and to withdraw money.

You don’t need to let us know your travel plans in advance, provided you are travelling within the EU or to Turkey.

If you’re travelling to countries outside these areas, then you should contact us to let us know, that way we’ll expect to see foreign transactions on your account.

If for any reason you’re unable to use your card while abroad, please contact us immediately by simply calling one of the numbers below:

Not as expensive as you may think
We take a responsible approach to customers’ money, so we’re up front about the charges when you use your Visa card abroad.

Non-sterling transaction fee
2.75% of the transaction's value is charged for any non-sterling transaction. The transaction is converted in to sterling using the Visa Scheme Exchange Rate which can be found on the Visa website.

Cash fee
2% (£2 minimum) of the transaction's value will be charged for cash withdrawals from an overseas ATM or over the counter, or for the purchase of travellers cheques or foreign currency outside the UK. For credit cards, this charge is 3% (£3 minimum) except for the Clear credit card. This is in addition to the non-sterling Transaction Fee.

Paying in sterling
When using a debit, credit or sterling prepaid card abroad, watch out for a practice known as dynamic currency conversion where you are given the option of paying for goods and services in either sterling or the local currency. While this may seem like an appealing proposition as you'll know exactly how much you're spending, as a general rule, you should choose to pay in the local currency. This is because many restaurants and retailers may use an unfavourable rate of exchange to convert the price, which means you could end up paying over the odds.

Foreign currency
You can also order over 80 different foreign currencies from us, delivered straight to your door for free if over £500, £5 charge if under.
