Charges and rates

The table below shows a comparison of the overall costs of our travel services based on amounts of €100 and €1000 purchased on the same day. Please note: Rates are correct on 2nd June 2014 and are for comparison only. Rates are subject to change daily.

Depending on how you plan to spend, it's worth considering whether you are better off paying by card or with cash. You need to weigh up the convenience and the charges that apply; either way it is important that you understand what the charges are so that you can make the best choice for you. A combination of payment methods may suit you best.

Using your card abroad


Taking your credit or debit card abroad can be a convenient and safe alternative to carrying cash. It's not as expensive as you might think, all you need to do is let us know before you travel. Find out more.

foreign currency transactions
Non-sterling transaction fee A non-sterling transaction fee is applied to any payment made for cash, goods or services using your debit card in a currency other than Sterling 2.75% of the value of the transaction
Cash fee In addition to the above charge, a cash fee is applied when using your debit card outside the UK for withdrawing foreign currency at:
  • Visa or PLUS cash machines
  • over the counter at a bank or Bureau de Change displaying the Visa sign
If you use your debit card to purchase foreign currency or travellers cheques in the UK we will not charge you a cash fee*
2.75% of the value of the transaction
+
2% of the value of the currency/cheques or £2.00 (whichever is greater)

 

Please note - there may be additional charges from the bank, retailer or cash machine where you use your card - you should be told of these before you make the transaction.

*The way the merchant processes the transaction may result in a fee being applied to your account. If this happens please contact us.

You can withdraw up to £250 per day in local currency from an ATM. Larger amounts can be withdrawn over the counter at banks that display the Visa sign, subject to their daily cash withdrawal limits.

Purchase of foreign currency or travellers cheques in the UK If you use your credit card to purchase from other retailers, such as Post Offices, Bureau de Change or travel agents you will incur a cash fee. 3% of the value of the currency/cheques or £3.00 (whichever is greater)

Please note - there may be additional charges from the bank, retailer or cash machine where you use your card - you should be told of these before you make the transaction.

For purchases there is an interest-free period of up to 56 days if you pay the balance in full on time (see condition 8 of the account terms and conditions). There is no interest-free period for promotional balances, cash withdrawals and gambling transactions.
